Rules of Sin and Virtue
Kedi: “What are sin and
virtue?”
Ganesh: “The accumulated
energy obtained as a result of actions, which makes a human experience good
fortune and liberation, is called virtue. The accumulated energy obtained as a
result of actions, which makes a human experience misfortune and bondage, is
called sin.”
Kedi: “Explain it to me
like a friend, not like a teacher”.
Ganesh: “When you do any
work, you get money in return. Some of that money is earned honestly, some
dishonestly. With that money, you buy comforts or fight inconveniences. In the
same way, whenever you perform any action, two types of energy get accumulated
in a compartment inside your mind: energy of virtue (punya) from good actions
and energy of sin from bad actions. You cannot spend this accumulated energy of
sin and virtue according to your own will. Lord Vishnu decides when to give you
which fortune from your virtue energy and when to give you which misfortune
from your sin energy”.
Kedi: “What are fortune
and misfortune?”
Ganesh: “From your
actions, you will get money. The happiness and comforts received from honestly
earned money—that is the form of fortune. The pain and troubles received from dishonestly
earned money—that is the form of misfortune”.
Kedi: “Do sin and virtue
get accumulated in a safe like banknotes?”
Ganesh: “Inside a human's
mind, there is a plot where the energy of sin and virtue gets accumulated.
Based on that energy, a person experiences more or less fortune and misfortune”.
Kedi: “Are sin and virtue
energy?”
Ganesh: “Yes, just like
when you charge an electric goods, electricity gets stored in its battery; in
the same way, from a human's actions, energy of sin and virtue gets stored in a
plot in their mind”.
Kedi: “How will we know
which action is sin and which is virtue?”
Ganesh: “There are some
rules for sin and virtue”.
Kedi: “Which rules?”
Ganesh: “Due to every
action of a human, they will either receive sin or receive virtue.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “Whether you eat
vada pav yourself, feed it to others, snatch it from someone and eat it, or
just imagine eating it—whatever action you perform, energy of sin or virtue
will accumulate in a plot in your mind”.
Kedi: “What is Virtue?”
Ganesh: “Performing an
action at the right time, in the right place, and with the right intention will
result in gaining virtue.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “You are sitting
in the office at the right time and in your proper place. Whatever tasks you
have, you are completing them with the right intention—then from that action,
energy of virtue will accumulate in a plot in your mind.
Kedi: “What is Sin”
Ganesh: “Performing an
action at the wrong time, in the wrong place, and with the wrong intention will
result in gaining sin”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “You are a pilot;
takeoff time is 11 am. At 11 am, at the wrong time, you sit down to have lunch.
You eat lunch in the wrong place—the cockpit. You deliberately do this with the
intention of delaying takeoff. From this action done at the wrong time, in the
wrong place, and with the wrong intention, the energy of sin will accumulate in
a plot in your mind”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “No single action
will give only virtue or only sin in all situations.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “Eating vada pav
is a virtue, and snatching vada pav from someone's mouth is a sin, but this
does not apply in all situations. If you eat vada pav in front of someone's
burning pyre just to trouble others, it becomes a sin. When you find out that
someone's vada pav has poison in it, and to save their life, you snatch the
vada pav from their mouth and throw it away—that becomes virtue”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “If a human
avoids or ignores performing the right action at the right time and in the
right place, they will receive sin”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “An emergency
situation is going on; security forces are helping injured people. You are not
part of the security team—you are an ordinary citizen—but you can help the
injured people. Still, thinking that you would have to work hard without
getting paid, you do not help those injured people. Your avoiding or ignoring
the right actions at the right time and in the right place makes you entitled
to sin”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “Only when a
human has sufficient accumulated virtue will they be able to experience
fortune; if they do not have sufficient accumulated virtue, they will not be
able to experience fortune”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “The accumulated
virtue in a plot in your mind is very little. With that much virtue, you cannot
get the fortune of eating biryani. With whatever accumulated virtue you have,
you can enjoy the fortune of eating vada pav”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “Only when a
human has accumulated sufficient sin will they be able to experience
misfortune; if they do not have sufficient accumulated sin, they will not be
able to experience misfortune”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “The accumulated
sin in a plot in your mind is very little. With that much sin, you are
experiencing the misfortune of living in a small 180 sq ft flat. If there was
more accumulated sin, you might be experiencing the misfortune of being
homeless”.
Kedi: “Will I remain poor
all my life?”
Ganesh: “When your sin
energy decreases and virtue energy increases, your poverty will end and you
will become rich too”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “Some actions
will give the feeling of gaining virtue, but their result will be sin”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “To save a little
money, you distribute 100 fake ice creams from a cheap company to orphanage
children. You will feel like you are doing a virtuous act, but by feeding those
children fake ice cream, you commit a sin”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “Some actions
will give the feeling of gaining sin, but their result will be gaining virtue”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “A terrorist is
injured and asks you for help. Out of humanity, you want to help him, but you
fear that if you help, the terrorist might take you hostage. So, even though
you want to, you do not help him. You feel that by not helping an injured
person, you have committed a sin, but in reality, by not helping a terrorist,
you have done a virtuous act”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “Merely by
supporting a virtuous person, a human will get a share in that virtuous
person's virtue”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “A patriotic
teacher is doing some work for the progress of his country. In such a case,
when you help that patriotic teacher, you will also get a share in his virtue.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “Merely by
supporting a sinful person, a human will get a share in that sinful person's
sin”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “A company
manufactures counterfeit medicines, and a minister and an official, in exchange
for bribes, grant that company permission and protection to sell the fake medicine.
By associating with a wrongdoer, the minister and the official will also share
in the sin”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “No sin or virtue
will ever go to waste”.
Kedi: “What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “You help
someone, but in return, that person cannot help you. Still, your help and
virtue will not go to waste—you will receive help from some other person. When
you harm someone without reason, and because they are weak, they cannot harm
you back, but your harm and sin will not go to waste—you will receive harm from
some other person”.
Kedi: “What is the next rule?”
Ganesh: “No human can
destroy their accumulated sin and virtue through any action.
Kedi: What does that
mean?”
Ganesh: “If yesterday you
did 3 sins and today 12 sins, for a total of 15 sins, then by doing some
virtuous act, you cannot erase those 15 sins. You will have to experience the
misfortune of those 15 sins. If yesterday you did 1 virtue and today 2 virtues,
for a total of 3 virtues, then by doing some sinful act, you cannot erase those
3 virtues. You will get to enjoy the fortune of those 3 virtues”.
Kedi: “Explain this again”.
Ganesh: “No matter how
many wrong actions you do, if you have already accumulated a lot of virtue
earlier, then despite doing wrong actions, you will still get to enjoy fortune
due to your old virtue. No matter how many good actions you do, if you have
already accumulated a lot of sin earlier, then despite doing good actions, you
will still have to experience misfortune due to your old sin”.
Kedi: “I am doing 3
virtues and 15 sins—what kind of example is this? Am I a sinner?”
Ganesh: “Considering how
much foolishness and haste you show, saying 15 sins is actually very little”.
Kedi: “Why can't someone
erase their old sins by doing good deeds?”
Ganesh: “Whenever you do
any good or bad deed, it will be a new deed for you; it will give you a new sin
or virtue. Old sins and virtues will be erased only by experiencing the
fortunes and misfortunes that come with them”.
Kedi: “How can I gain
more virtue?”
Ganesh: “Experiencing
these eight things—sex, purity, love, happiness, peace, knowledge, bliss, and
liberation—leads to immense virtue”.
Kedi: “What leads to
immense sin?”
Ganesh: “Experiencing
these eight things—lust, anger, greed, addiction, ego, doubt, jealousy,
cruelty, etc.—leads to immense sin”.
